What happens in the moments before death? In this pre-recorded conversation, Dr Michael Barbato, palliative care expert, and Preparing the Way founder and lead educator Helen Callanan explore the remarkable world of deathbed visions and the shifting states of consciousness that can arise at the end of life.
This video is a clip from one of two pre-recorded videos included in the Dr Michael Barbato Trilogy — a unique learning experience that also includes a live curated Q&A with Dr Barbato and a paperback copy of his book, Caring for the living and the dying. By registering, you’ll gain full access to these resources and join a community committed to deepening death literacy and compassionate care.
Understanding deathbed visions
Deathbed visions are extraordinary phenomena often reported by people nearing the end of life. Dr Barbato shares research showing that even those deeply sedated or medically unresponsive may experience vivid dreams or visions — moments of awareness that may offer comfort and reassurance in the final stages of life.
Monitors tracking brain activity have revealed surprising spikes in awareness, suggesting that the dying process may be accompanied by experiences akin to dreams or meditative states, even when there are no outward signs of consciousness.
Personal reflections and research insights
Dr Barbato’s lifelong fascination with the end of life began with his own near-death experience as a child, which profoundly shaped his career in palliative care and his commitment to exploring what happens as we die. In this video, he shares these personal insights alongside scientific findings, helping us reframe death not as an end, but as a transformation.
Supporting families through knowledge
One of the most powerful outcomes of Dr Barbato’s work is helping families understand that their person may still be aware of sound and touch, even in unresponsive states. He encourages families to speak, hold hands, and gently connect — small actions that can bring immense comfort and affirm presence at the bedside.
The bigger picture: A kinder side of dying
Dr Barbato’s research challenges us to see death as more than a biological event. By combining science, experience, and compassion, he helps paint a picture of dying as a natural part of life — something to be met with understanding, respect, and care.
