End of life doula training: a life skill for everybody

by | 22 Apr 2026 | Care & Practice

At Preparing the Way, we often meet people who feel drawn to end of life doula training but hesitate because they are unsure what they would ‘do’ with it. Would they need to start a business? Change careers? Step into something unfamiliar? The truth is much simpler, and far more expansive.

End of life education is not only for those who want to become professional doulas. It is for anyone who wants to feel more prepared, more confident, and more capable when it comes to one of the most universal experiences we all share.

A skill set for life, not just work

We sometimes talk about the thousand faces of an end of life doula, and that idea applies just as much to the people who come to train with us. Some participants do go on to offer doula services in their communities. They build practices, support families, and create meaningful, values-led work. And many do not.

Instead, they take what they learn and weave it into the lives they already have. They become the person in their family who knows how to respond when someone receives a serious diagnosis. They understand how to sit with uncertainty, how to listen without rushing to fix, and how to navigate conversations that others often avoid. They bring calm into situations that might otherwise feel overwhelming.

That is not a small thing. It is deeply needed.

Learning what many of us were never taught

In many parts of our culture, conversations about end of life are limited, delayed, or avoided altogether. As a result, people are often left to navigate unfamiliar situations without guidance. End of life doula training helps to change that.

Doula training offers practical knowledge about what happens at end of life, how to communicate clearly and compassionately, and how to support both the person at the centre and those around them. It also creates space to reflect on your own relationship with end of life: your values, your beliefs, your hopes, and your concerns.

This training equips you with resources, information, links, skills and deep knowledge that allow for a calm response to life’s challenging times.

This is not about having all the answers. It is about becoming more comfortable with the questions and knowing where to access support and resources.

Where could this take you?

Our training pathways are designed to meet you wherever you are, and to grow with you.

The Foundation Workshop is where most people begin. It is an introduction to end of life doula work delivered live online and occasionally in person in one day or two half-days. It offers an overview of death literacy, practical skills, and what it means to accompany someone at this stage of life. It is suitable for anyone, regardless of background or experience.

From there, the Intensive Course offers a deeper four-day immersion for those who want to go further, whether for personal enrichment or professional development. Delivered in small groups of no more than ten participants online and occasionally in person, it is our flagship training and an experience that many describe as genuinely transformative.

For those seeking nationally recognised credentials, we offer two accredited pathways. The End of Life Doula Skill Set is a flexible option comprising four accredited units that can be completed individually, covering areas including life review, palliative care, active dying, and funeral and bereavement support.

For those committed to a formal qualification, the 10966NAT Certificate IV in End of Life Doula Services is an 18-month course delivered in partnership with Essential Skills Training & Recruitment (ESTR, RTO ID 91729). It is Australia’s, and indeed the world’s, only national accreditation in this field.

We also work with organisations through tailored workplace training, designed in conversation with teams to address their specific context, people, and goals.

Not sure where to start? Our free End of Life Doula Info Sessions are a simple, low-pressure way to learn about all our pathways, ask questions, and get a sense of what this work involves. They run regularly online and are open to everyone.

There’s a place for you here

If you feel curious about this work, you do not need to have a clear plan for where it will lead. You do not need to decide whether you will become a professional doula, a volunteer, or simply someone who is better equipped to support others in your own circles.

What matters is the willingness to learn, to engage, and to develop the capacity to accompany others with care and presence. That is the common thread that runs through every person who joins us.

There is no single path here. There are only many ways of showing up, each one meaningful in its own right. And yours might be one of them.
